With the Ottawa River rising, officials in Gatineau started handing out sandbags Tuesday to Aylmer residents affected by what was expected to be minor flooding compared to last spring’s deluge.
But the Ottawa River Regulating Committee warned Wednesday that level and flows on the Ottawa River are expected to increase significantly this week due to rising temperatures and rain.
As of Wednesday morning, the City of Gatineau reported that the water level in the Aylmer sector was 59.29 m above sea level, a centimetre away from an alert. Other areas of Gatineau are not at risk, the city reported.
A year ago, the Ottawa River, measured at Britannia, peaked at 60.44 metres, the highest in more than a century.
At risk of flooding were 27 homes on Rue Fraser. Affected residents – who need proof of their addresss – can pick up sandbags at nearby Parc Louis-Roy at the intersection of Minervois and Louis-Roy streets.
Firefighters were going door to door to warn affected shoreline residents but water levels were still low in other parts of Gatineau, the city said.
According to the Ottawa River Regulating Committee, spring runoff is increasing and up to 60 mm of rain is expected over the week in parts of the river basin.
Depending on how much rain falls, that could lead to “minor” flooding in low-lying areas along the shores of the river downstream of Ottawa-Gatineau to Montreal over the next few days, the committee warned.
“During this critical period, the committee will take all possible actions to limit the amount of flooding and will continuously monitor conditions at all points along the river,” it said in a statement.
