It’s probably no surprise, but Canada 150 brought the greatest number of tourists to Ottawa on record — more than 11 million of them.
That’s an increase of 8.8 per cent over the previous year.
The visitors left more than $2.3 billion behind them when they went home, an increase of about 10 per cent.
Increases were strong among Canadians (who are the biggest group of visitors each year), Americans, and overseas visitors.
Facebook and Twitter traffic were also up.
While Canada Day and its spinoff events were a major draw, the city also benefitted from the visit of the huge mechanical dragon-horse and spider from the French company La Machine during a four-day spectacle of street theatre.
Organizers estimated that 750,000 people saw this performance.
Information sources include Statistics Canada, Ottawa International Airport Authority, Conference Board of Canada, Smith Travel Research, Ottawa Tourism, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
