A man in his 50s was revived after suffering a cardiac arrest in a grocery store Thursday.
The Ottawa Paramedic Service said the a man collapsed at around 10:50 a.m. as he walked out of the Canadian Superstore on Innes Road after feeling dizzy. An off-duty nurse near the cash registers ran to his aid and began CPR, while firefighters — on site for an unrelated matter — located an automated external defibrillator in the store.
The firefighters and store staff used the AED to administer one shock to the patient, who quickly regained consciousness.
Paramedics arrived minutes later and took the man to hospital, where he was reported in serious but stable condition.
“This event clearly shows the importance of bystander CPR and the life saving effects of Automated External Defibrillators,” the paramedic service said in a statement. “The actions of the nurse, the firefighters of station 53 and the staff of the Superstore really made a difference in saving that man’s life.”
