An accused killer beaten in a jailhouse attack has died, marking the city’s 11th homicide of the year, this newspaper has learned.
Marco Michaud, 36, was pronounced dead after he was taken off life support this week. Michaud suffered extensive head injuries in the April 11 beating, which left him brain dead and in an induced coma. He underwent multiple surgeries after the attack.
Three fellow inmates were charged by homicide detectives with attempted murder for the beating. Mohamed Barkhadle, 32, Pierre Senatus, 22, and Jimmy St. Hilaire, 19, are all now expected to be charged with murder for the jailhouse killing.
No weapons are believed to have been used in the attack, which was captured on Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre security cameras, but police believe the fight allegedly had elements of planning and that the inmates orchestrated getting him alone.
It’s not yet known what prompted the attack but several people have told this newspaper that in the days leading up to the killing, Michaud voiced concerns about being scared in the jail.
He was in detention awaiting trial on a charge of second-degree murder.
Michaud had turned himself in to homicide detectives on Feb. 24, after police obtained a warrant for his arrest for what was an ultimately fatal beating in Vanier.
Detectives allege Michaud attacked 53-year-old Gerald Leduc inside Leduc’s Selkirk Street apartment in July 2017. The drug-related beating left Leduc in a coma for six months. He succumbed to his injuries in January, at which point, police started investigating the attack as a homicide. Michaud had been housed for just six weeks before he himself was the victim of a violent beating.
Michaud, originally from Timmins, On., and a father of one, was a convicted drug dealer with a lengthy criminal record dating back nearly two decades. He spent considerable time in and out of jail for convictions of drug possession, possessing a dangerous weapon, arson and robbery.
All three alleged attackers in the jailhouse fight have outstanding criminal cases against them.
Barkhadle, whom Crown prosecutors once sought to make a dangerous offender, was charged by Ottawa police last year with killing a 35-year-old woman, whose name is shielded by a publication ban, in her Mechanicsville apartment in March 2017, leaving her toddler son to fend for himself for days.
He also awaits trial for attempted murder and aggravated sexual assault in an unrelated case.
Senatus was charged in 2016 by human trafficking detectives after a violent encounter in a Sandy Hill apartment where police allege the then 21-year-old Senatus pistol-whipped and sexually assaulted a woman.
He was also charged with eight gun-related counts, including pointing a gun and carrying a concealed weapon. He also faces multiple assault charges, including sexual assault with a weapon, assault with a weapon and aggravated assault as well as failure to comply with judicial release conditions.
St. Hilaire was charged in January of this year after a failed armed robbery at a Nepean Bitcoin business where four employees were bound.
Police said the suspects tried to coerce employees into completing a transaction but a fifth employee in another office called police, causing the suspects to flee empty-handed.
St. Hilaire was arrested near the scene and charged with five counts each of robbery, pointing a firearm and forcible confinement plus wearing a disguise and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. He has also been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and having a loaded gun to commit a crime while being banned from having firearms.
