One person is dead following a fire at a house in Smiths Falls early Monday morning.
Smiths Falls firefighters responded at approximately 1:35 a.m. to a fire at 80–82 Victoria Ave., fire officials reported Monday.
Firefighters called in mutual aid from the Montague Township and Perth Fire departments, while town police also responded.
“Sadly, there was one fatality,” fire officials said in a media release.
The property housed six apartments.
“All other residents are accounted for and have been temporarily housed,” fire officials added.
They had no further immediate details about the victim. Police could not be reached for comment.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to a third-floor unit.
Smiths Falls police, the fire department and the Office of the Fire Marshal were on scene to investigate the cause of the fire later Monday morning.
Emergency officials were asking people to stay clear of the affected area until that investigation is done.
Lanark County Victim Services and the Red Cross were helping the displaced tenants.
