Family and friends of Opiny P’Ochieng say they are shocked to hear about the violent death of the 49-year-old, who they remember as “funny” and “quiet.”

P’Ochieng was found dead of a gunshot wound near Russell Road and Southvale Crescent in the city’s south end on Saturday around 3:30 a.m.

Police said Monday they’re looking for any information from the public about P’Ochieng, the city’s 12th homicide victim, who was last seen around 3 a.m. near the intersection of Montreal Road and Cantin Street in Vanier on Saturday.

Police have asked nearby establishments to check their video security systems. They said they had not determined whether there’s a gang element to the shooting. No arrests have been made.

Annick, a friend of P’Ochieng who asked that her last name not be used, said she couldn’t believe her longtime barmate is gone.

“I was shocked,” she said. “What happened, you know? Because he never gave me the impression that he was involved with drugs or gangs.”

Annick said she met P’Ochieng at a bar a few minutes away from the intersection where he was last seen before his death.

Three years ago, Annick said she was with her friend at DJ Nels on Montreal Road having a drink when they saw P’Ochieng sitting alone. They struck up a conversation, and became quick pals.

“We used to meet at that bar and have a few drinks and dance,” Annick said. “He was quiet, but he was not a bad man.”

P’Ochieng’s nephew, Ben Amai, said he was also shocked to hear the news of his uncle’s death.

“I was surprised, because he’s not a violent guy at all,” said Amai. “He was a nice guy with a sense of humour.”

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the major crime unit at 613-236-1222, extension 5493. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
