Quick and efficient response to domestic abuse cases will be a priority for Gatineau police in 2108, Chief Mario Harel said Tuesday in presenting the department’s 2017 statistics to council.
The Outaouais centre reported a one per cent increase in overall calls in 2017, which included a 12 per cent hike in calls for crimes against people. Crimes against property dropped by one per cent.
Domestic situations represented about 60 per cent of the 3,184 crimes against people, the chief told Gatineau council.
Going forward, the chief said the department would take “serious measures” in 2018 in regards to domestic crime to ensure “the security of victims.” A first step will be to consult with the regional director of public prosecutions to determine the best way to help and support the victims.
While violent crime dropped overall by 41 per cent over the 12 months, complaints of armed assault and sexual assault were up by 24 per cent, the chief said.
The city had just one homicide and five attempted homicides over the year.
The department also handled 54 child pornography cases in 2017, more than double the 2016 total, the chief reported. The increase was, in part, due to cases transferred by specialized cybercrime units at the Sûreté du Québec and Ottawa Police Service, the chief said.
He noted that 13 per cent of the child porn cases stemmed from “sexting” messages between teens. The department has implemented a campaign called #GARDEÇAPOURTOI (keep it to yourself) to warn young people of the potential danger of sexting.
While the department registered a 13 per cent drop in traffic citations in 2017 from 2016, Harel said bad weather was probably more responsible than good behaviour.
Gatineau police had all hands on deck during last spring’s flood crisis, leaving little time or officers for traffic details.
In addition to the focus on domestic confrontations, Harel said police priorities for 2018 include improving links with cultural communities, developing a community security strategy, continuing to work towards a solution on the issue of homelessness and optimizing the department’s website for increased use by the public.
