Careless smoking is to blame for a fire Monday at a Victoria Avenue home in Smiths Falls that claimed the life of a man in his 50s.
The town’s fire department issued a statement Tuesday afternoon noting its investigators, along with the Smiths Falls Police Service and the Office of the Fire Marshal, have concluded the cause to be “accidental due to careless smoking.”
Officials released few details, other than to confirm the victim, whose identity was not released, was in his early 50s.
Smiths Falls firefighters responded at approximately 1:35 a.m. Monday to a fire at 80–82 Victoria Avenue, then called in mutual aid from the Montague Township and Perth fire departments.
The property contained six apartments. Firefighters managed to contain the fire to a third-floor unit.
