You can probably guess some of the basic items that go in your emergency kit. Non-perishable food and bottled water. A flashlight and batteries. Candles and matches. Here are a few things you might not have thought about but could be a lifesaver when you need your kit the most.
Radio
During a prolonged power outage, the radio is a way to receive timely emergency information when all other information sources may be unavailable. Ideally you want a hand-cranking or solar-powered version so you don’t have to worry about power outages or batteries.
Copies of important documents
Home ownership. Passports. Citizenship papers. Birth certificates. Insurance papers. You probably already keep these in a safe place. Have them together as part of your emergency kit so that they remain safe and with you in case you have to evacuate your home quickly. Also include a recent picture of each of your family members in case anyone goes missing.
Cash
If there is a widespread power outage, transactions such as e-transfers, credit card and debit card payments may not be available and bank machines may not function. Have some cash on hand in small denominations.
Medication
Whether it is prescription medication, or over-the-counter products, if you’re forced to leave your home for a few days you will need a supply of those medications with you. Rotate them in and out of your kit just like you would food and water. If you cannot have a supply of medication on hand, include a list of your medications in your kit.
Pet supplies
Fluffy and Rover can’t pack a kit on their own, so you have to remember to have some food, a water dish and maybe some chew toys to keep them healthy and content during a very stressful time. Make sure your pet has a tag or microchip identification so that they can be reunited with you in case you become separated during the emergency.
