Ottawa police searching for drugs at a home in north Vanier Wednesday found a new version of what they think is a deadly opioid, and it looks like putty with purple dye.

A release on Thursday says officers seized drugs, cash, scales and drug packaging materials, including “a purple putty-like substance believed to contain fentanyl” from a home on Carillon Street.

Health Canada is analyzing the putty along with other drugs seized there, including cocaine, crack cocaine, hydromorphone, marijuana, Oxycocet and others.

Since police aren’t sure what’s in the purple blob, they are warning the public to take extra care.

“This is a reminder that there is no reliable way for the user or a peer to confirm what drug is actually being ingested,” said Staff Sgt. Rick Carey.

There is more information on fentanyl at http://www.StopOverdoseOttawa.ca. The web resource also includes information on where to get help in Ottawa, tips for parents, local data on overdoses and drug use, and how to prevent overdoses.

Steven Mavis, 55, has been charged with eight counts of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000.
