Charges against three inmates have been upgraded to first-degree murder after the victim of a jailhouse beating on April 11 died late last week.

Ottawa police confirmed Thursday the attempted-murder charges in the attack on Marco Michaud, 36, have been upgraded to murder in the wake of Michaud’s death on May 4.

Due to appear in court on May 18 are Mohamed Barkhadle, 32, Pierre Senatus, 22, and Jimmy St-Hilaire, 19.

Michaud — himself an accused killer — suffered extensive head injuries in the beating, which took place inside the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre. He had been kept in an induced coma while he underwent multiple surgeries.

No weapons are believed to have been used in the attack, which was captured on security cameras at the Innes Road jail. Police believe the fight was planned and that Michaud‘s isolation had been orchestrated by inmates.

Michaud was awaiting trial on a charge of second-degree murder.

He turned himself in on Feb. 24 after police obtained a warrant for his arrest for the fatal beating of Gerald Leduc, 53, inside a Vanier apartment in July 2017. Leduc was in a coma for six months before he died in January.

In addition to the police investigation, a mandatory inquest into Michaud‘s death will occur. It is the third homicide of an inmate inside the jail’s walls since it opened.

The three men accused in the murder are also awaiting trials for violent or armed offences.
