Police issued a warning to watch out for a man posing as an Uber driver and possibly targeting intoxicated women after a woman was offered a ride, then allegedly sexually assaulted.
Police are searching for the male suspect after a woman in her late 20s was picked up in the ByWard Market in the early morning hours Wednesday.
Police said the woman was sexually assaulted as the man was driving. The suspect, still posing as an Uber driver, then told her to go to a nearby ATM to pay for the ride in cash.
Uber drivers are strictly forbidden from accepting payment in cash under Ottawa bylaws.
The suspect followed the woman into the ATM “insisting on payment,” police said. The suspect left after the woman paid him, and she reported the incident to police.
The man is described as a male with light brown skin, standing 6-0 and approximately 180 pounds, with short, dark hair shaved at the sides.
Police released several photos of a suspect after an alleged sexual assault involving a man posing as an Uber driver.
Police released several photos of the suspect, which appear to have been captured by surveillance cameras monitoring the ATM.
Investigators with the sexual assault and child abuse unit said they are concerned the same man is possibly targeting women “who appear to be intoxicated when bars (and) restaurants are closing for the night.”
Police warned the public to verify the credentials of their driver before entering the vehicle, and issued a reminder that Uber drivers do not accept cash payments.
Police released several photos of a suspect after an alleged sexual assault involving a man posing as an Uber driver.
Police said the most recent assault is not linked to similar incidents reported in December and January, also involving a man posing as an Uber driver and allegedly sexually assaulting female passengers.
Police received more than 10 reports about that suspect, with most incidents reported around the ByWard Market, where the suspect would offer rides to women leaving bars and restaurants and who appeared to be intoxicated. The driver then reportedly sexually assaulted his victims once they were in his car.
Police said that suspect also stole debit and credit cards from the victims, which he later used to defraud them.
