A 28-year-old man now accused of second-degree murder was the new roommate of victim Joey Morin, whose body likely lay undiscovered for days after he died.

Gatineau police revealed Wednesday that Kamy Lafrenière is charged with committing the crime “on or about April 13” and was scheduled to appear in court in Rouyn-Noranda Wednesday afternoon.

Morin, 23, was discovered dead in his basement apartment at 193 Fernand-Arvisais St. when police were asked to check on him at about 10 a.m. on April 21.

An autopsy revealed that he had died from head injuries caused by a blunt object sometime between April 13 and April 21.

Police said that Lafrenière, a close friend according to police, had fled the Outaouais in the days after the discovery of Morin’s body.

He was arrested without incident Tuesday by Gatineau police with the help of provincial police in Rouyn-Noranda, more than 500 km northeast of Gatineau. Police also searched a home on a sideroad in the small town of La Reine, a further 100 km north.

His death was Gatineau’s second homicide of 2018.
