In a surefire sign of summer, the Rideau Canal’s 2018 season launches Friday.
Local MP Catherine McKenna, the minister of environment and climate change responsible for Parks Canada, was set to kick it off at 10 a.m. by arriving at the Ottawa Lockstation by voyageur canoe with local paddlers.
The navigation season on the canal, which allows boaters and paddlers to travel the 202 km from the banks of the Ottawa River to Lake Ontario at Kingston, runs from the Victoria Day weekend to Thanksgiving. It first opened in 1832.
Free lockage day is June 24.
