Despite repeated warnings, Ontario drivers continue to be heavy-footed travellers, provincial police report.

The OPP laid more than 10,600 charges for speeding during the six-day Canada Road Safety Week blitz, 175 of them in the street racing category, (50 km/h or more over the posted speed limit.

Both totals were increases over the same period of 2017.

Officers also laid 726 seat belt tickets during the May 15-31 blitz, a 12 per cent increase over the 2017 tally.

The good news was distracted driving charges dropped by about 12 per cent, to 424 tickets.

There were 124 arrests for impaired driving.

Four people died on the holiday weekend, one on the roads, two on an off-road vehicle and one drowning.
