With stormy skies ahead for Saturday and Sunday, Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend organizers say runners should be prepared for potential delays and seek shelter if conditions get rough.

If thunder or lightning crash the party before a race begins, organizers said they will delay its start until the storm passes. This could impact the start times of races that follow, spokeswoman Annie Boucher said.

Three races are scheduled for Saturday — the Ottawa 2K, HTG Sports Ottawa 5K and Ottawa 10K — and three for Sunday — the Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon, Kids Marathon and Half Marathon.

Road closures: What to know for Ottawa Race Weekend

On Friday, Environment Canada was predicting a 70 per cent chance of showers or thunderstorms for Saturday, and a 60 per cent of showers or thunderstorms for Sunday. Both will have daily highs in the mid-20s.

If a thunderstorm starts or lightening is seen once a race is underway, runners are advised to seek shelter where possible until the weather has passed.

Boucher said if at any point a race volunteer instructs runners to leave the course, “please follow their instructions, immediately.”

Beyond that, runners should gauge their own comfort level with race weather conditions.

“Runners should treat a race day scenario as they would a regular training run. If they are not comfortable running, they should stop and find a safe spot to wait out the storm.”

A standardized series of coloured flags called the Event Alert System will be used to communicate any emergency situations to racers. The flags will be flown at medical aid stations and vans along the route.

Live updates will also be posted by the Twitter @ottawamarathon account.
