Explore the country downtown at Food Aid and Mayor’s Rural Expo

Mayor Jim Watson and Michael Maidment, Executive Director of the Ottawa Food Bank, will co-host this year’s Food Aid fundraiser BBQ and Mayor's Rural Expo on Friday, June 1. This event celebrates rural Ottawa while raising money in support of the Ottawa Food Bank’s Food Aid program.

Come down to City Hall for this free, fun, family-friendly event. This year’s highlights include:

• $10 BBQ lunch by The Works from 11 am to 2 pm
• Celebrity cow-milking competition at 12:15 pm
• Vendor show including farm animals, farmers, artisans, festivals and organizations promoting rural goods and attractions from 10 am to 2 pm
• Music from Ottawa’s New Country 94

Connect with your rural neighbours and learn about tourist attractions just outside the Greenbelt at the expo booths, located outside on Marion Dewar Plaza and inside City Hall at Jean Pigott Place.

Can’t attend in person? You can still donate to the cause online at ottawafoodbank.ca (select drop down item “Food Aid Beef Program”), or call 613-745-7001 and mention that your donation is for Food Aid.

Facts and figures

• Last year’s event was a great success, raising $106,000 for Food Aid.
• The Ottawa Food Bank is the Ottawa Region’s central emergency food assistance organization. In 2017 the Ottawa Food Bank provided emergency food assistance to 38,500 people a month, 35 per cent of whom were children.
• The Ottawa Food Bank’s Food Aid program raises money to purchase local ground beef, distributed to member agencies to provide protein for families who do not often have opportunities to eat meat.
• Since its inception in 2004, Food Aid has distributed 901,265 pounds of ground beef.
