A couple on Third Avenue eyes a weather-worn canoe, first negotiating the asking price, then negotiating whether they can manage the urban portage through the neighbourhood streets crammed with bargain hunters and curiosity seekers.
Another man winds his way through the bustling streets on this 32nd annual Great Glebe Garage Sale with a pair of shiny cross-country skis slung over each shoulder.
Little kids rummage through bins of trinkets and knick-knacks while their parents haggle over how much pocket change should be exchanged for toys, stuffed animals and comic books. Bigger kids thumb through bins of vinyl looking for vintage steals.
Up the street, a woman peruses racks of posh Burberry and London Fog coats, settling on a full fur coat despite the humidex ready of a balmy 27.
Yes, seemingly anything and everything was for sale in the Glebe on Saturday, with a percentage of proceeds, as always, going to benefit the Ottawa Food Bank. Last year’s event raised more than $14,000 for the local charity.
“Everything but the kitchen sink … I found the sink!” tweeted Mayor Jim Watson, who recently launched his re-election bid and held court with supporters on First Avenue.

Other local politicians — and hopefuls — used the opportunity for some catch-all campaigning, with Ottawa-Centre Liberal MPP Yasir Naqvi joined by his federal counterpart Catherine McKenna, and NDP candidate Joel Harden maintaining a visible presence in the neighbourhood.
And while some shoppers were content to wander the city blocks with sharp eyes out for impulse buys, others headed to “destination lawns” like the one near the corner of Powell and Lyon Street, where Chris Blois has set up shop on a friend’s front lawn for the past 13 years with an enormous array of top-shelf golf gear.
“I used to do my own garage sale closer to my home in Vanier and we’d have 10 people show up,” Blois said. “Now we get hundreds.”

Blois helps organize the Dan Côté and Bob Bullard Foundation golf tournament, with half the money raised going to cancer research and care, and the other half outfitting kids who can’t afford hockey gear.
On Second Avenue, a band of 11-year-old rockers, The Anacondas, plugged in their guitars, fired up the amps and started blasting out The Beatles’ Ticket to Ride for the lunch crowd. The band sold seven-inch records of their self-produced single — an original tune called North Star — with a portion of those proceeds also going to charity.

A little further down the soggy street, sellers towelled off their tables from a morning rainfall, with some abandoning their lawns altogether and posting signs that read: “Great Glebe Porch Sale.”
“I don’t think it’s publicized enough that this raises money for the food bank,” said one woman, Michelle, at her home on Lyon Street.
“We’ve been doing this for over 30 years now, and I’m just done with the haggling. One person was haggling over lights I had for $2. I said, just put the $2 in the donation bin and you can have the lights for free.”
She estimated she’s donated between $50 and $100 to the food bank each year (sellers are encouraged to donate a percentage of their profits to the charity.)
Others set up shop solely for charity, like the folks from Sit With Me, a non-profit, volunteer-run dog rescue charity.
“We put out a call each year to our donors, and every year they drop their stuff off (on a volunteer’s lawn on Glebe Avenue).
“We have stereo systems, golf clubs, hockey gear, clothes, toys … . And anything that doesn’t get sold we put into an online auction,” said volunteer Sarah Clark. Last year’s effort raised more than $1,000 for the charity.
The day wasn’t without its pitfalls, however, particularly for those who chose to navigate the streets by automobile. Bylaw officers were out in full force Saturday, with city officials tweeting out a warning: “We will have additional officers in the Glebe today for the Great Glebe Garage Sale. Please follow posted parking regulations to ensure you only get what you bargain for!”
Happy treasure hunting, #ottcity!
