Despite a tragic weekend that culminated in Ottawa’s 14th homicide of the year, Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau insists Ottawa is still a relatively safe city in comparison to other cities of its size.
“The number of shootings is a concern,” said Bordeleau, acknowledging after a Police Service Board meeting on Monday the increase in homicides from 14 in 2017 to 13 already in 2018. “It has become more violent than in other years.”
Police are hunting for a Tristan Campbell, 34, after a shooting on Sunday evening left a father of two dead and a woman injured.
Also on Sunday Tyler Hikoalok, 18, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Christian librarian Elisabeth Salm, 59, who was found partially clothed and clinging to life on May 24 in the quiet reading room operated by the Christian Science church on Laurier Avenue near Elgin Street.
