The Chem Norma remained stuck “like a boot in mud” Thursday, two days after she ran aground on the St. Lawrence Seaway at Morrisburg.
The efforts of the tugs Ocean K. Rusby and Ocean Pierre Julien Wednesday weren’t enough to free her.
Officials have now come up with a plan to “wiggle” her free to break the suction of the boggy bottom, St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. spokesman Andrew Bagora said.
There’s been no spill or damage to the 145-metre tanker and the rescue effort is also being monitored by officials from the Canadian Coast Guard, federal and provincial environment ministries and Transport Canada, he said Thursday.
Once freed, the Chem Norma will be taken to anchorage in Morrisburg for an inspection, then on to the lock at Iroquois for a further inspection by divers before she can go on her way to Sarnia.
Despite reports to the contrary, a pair of Ocean tugs couldn’t free the 145-metre tanker ship Wednesday, reported the Prescott Anchor, a social-media based shipping group. Thankfully, there’s no injury, damage to the ship, or spill of fuel or cargo.
The Anchor was the first to report that the oil/chemical tanker had run aground west of Morrisburg Beach, about 80 kilometres south of Ottawa, early Tuesday morning.
The marine traffic station just across the channel in northern New York State tweeted that more tugs and the offloading of cargo might be required to free the ship.
The ship ran aground at 4:05 a.m. Tuesday due to steering problems but it happened outside of the shipping channel, so other marine traffic was not impeded.
Bagora said Tuesday that the double hull required of ships carrying liquid cargo on the St. Lawrence system had not been breached, although he did not specify the cargo the Chem Norma is carrying.
