It only took one discarded cigarette to turn 40 people out of their homes and cause $1.75 million in damage to their Barrhaven townhome complex Wednesday.
The three-alarm fire at 601 Chapman Mills Dr. caused “extensive fire damage” to eight of the 16 units, Ottawa fire said Thursday.
“Evidence found indicates that the fire can be attributed to the improper disposal of smoking materials,” the fire service said in a release. Investigators had sifted through physical evidence and interviewed witnesses.
The fire began in a lower balcony at the rear of the building.
Ottawa fire is asking people to make sure they throw out any smoking materials in a non-combustible and wind-proof container, and never in a garbage or recycling bin, a flowerpot or garden mulch.
