It was an argument over as little as $40 that escalated until Brandon Ethier stormed out of his bedroom and stabbed his roommate, Joshua Briere, according to testimony Thursday from an eyewitness to his friend’s death.

“They got into an argument. … I knew it was over money,” Daulton Boudreau, 24, told the jury in Ethier’s second-degree murder trial. “Josh was asking Brandon to borrow money. … I can’t remember if it was $40 or $60… Josh didn’t like the way Brandon said no, so Josh pushed Brandon, shoved him.”

The argument escalated, Boudreau testified, until Ethier retreated to his bedroom and quickly emerged with a hunting knife.

“(Ethier) was walking at him fast … Josh put his hands up to block. I saw him get stabbed, I didn’t see how many times, it was so surreal.”

Ethier had entered a guilty plea to manslaughter upon arraignment, but the Crown is proceeding with a jury trial on second-degree murder charges. Ethier, who is represented at trial by Doug Baum, has pleaded not guilty.

Boudreau is the third Crown witness to testify with a similar account of the party on Oct. 22, 2016 at the apartment his friend Briere shared with Ethier at 1098 Clyde Ave. Boudreau was celebrating his birthday that night, drinking beer and vodka, smoking weed and snorting cocaine with Briere, 26, and Ethier, 27, at the time of the killing. Briere’s girlfriend and his younger brother, Joel, then 17, were also at the party and testified earlier this week.

Boudreau said Ethier and Briere got into a “heated” argument at one point early in the party, but cooled down and the party continued.

Joel Briere testified earlier about the “tussle,” which ended when his older brother tackled Ethier, his roommate of about six months, into a wall. It left an imprint in the drywall that police at the crime scene later saw partially covered by a painting.

Both partygoers testified the argument started when Briere stepped in to stop Ethier, who was playfully punching Boudreau in what he called “birthday beats” — 23 punches for his 23rd birthday.

“I really didn’t like it so we tussled a bit; it was really nothing,” Boudreau said in court Thursday. “Josh jumped in to try to stop it and he got hit by accident by Brandon — he clipped his forehead.”

The two broke out in a second argument, this time over money, much later in the party, some time after 2 a.m.

“Brandon hit Josh with a beer bottle, blood was coming down Josh’s head. They fought and Josh grabbed (Ethier) by the legs and lifted him,” Boudreau said.

The fight lasted about 45 seconds, Boudreau testified, until Ethier went to his bedroom, and returned less than a minute later with the knife, fatally stabbing Briere twice.

Joel Briere stood up from the couch and punched Ethier to the ground, Boudreau said, before staggering outside where he collapsed in the street. The 911 call Joel Briere made came in at 2:56 a.m. as he tried to comfort his dying brother.

Still standing halfway across the room from the killer, Boudreau said he “ran right out of there.”

“(Ethier) looked at me, I thought he was gonna come at me so I just ran,” he said. “I saw Josh collapsed on the ground outside and Joel calling 911 trying to help him.”

He said he then saw Ethier emerge from the apartment, his hoodie zipped up, the knife tucked into his belt.

“He said something to Josh, (then) he started looking at me and I thought he was going to come after me,” said Boudreau, who said he ran down Clyde Avenue the opposite direction. He took a taxi home, where he would eventually get a phone call from police.

Police using a K-9 unit tracked the hunting knife to a wooded area about 400 metres from the scene, near Carlington Park. Investigators would later find DNA matching both Ethier and Briere on the 15-cm “swivelled” blade. Ethier was arrested in hospital where he was being treated for an apparent drug overdose.

His trial continues.
