One man was arrested on a charge of assault with a weapon as Ottawa police officers teamed up with Ottawa bylaw officers June 1-2 for a safety initiative targeting disorderly behaviour in the ByWard Market, Rideau Street and along Montreal Road.

“There was a strong police presence in these areas, which included ongoing foot patrols, proactive bar and restaurant checks, monitoring of parking garages, as well as response to calls for service,” said Ottawa police Supt. Mark Ford in a release. “Three fights were broken up, 36 open liquor containers were seized and poured out, and 14 panhandlers were moved along.”

During the blitz, police arrested one person for allegedly assaulting another with a weapon. Another person was charged for breaching conditions from the court. A total of 12 provincial offence notices were issued for open liquor containers and one person was issued aprovincial offence notice for public intoxication. Another person was issued a notice for trespassing.

Police also issued warnings for drug use, making excessive noise and panhandling.

Similar community safety initiatives are being planned throughout the summer in high trafficked areas around the city.
