The fake Uber driver accused of preying on women in the ByWard Market has won bail as he awaits prosecution.
Accused rapist Hissan Hamad, 37, was released from jail without a surety. His bail conditions come with a 9 p.m. curfew and require him to check in with his bail supervisor once a week.
His bail conditions also prohibit him from contacting or communicating with three alleged victims. Hamad is also prohibited from being within 100 metres of one of the complainants’ residence, work and place of worship.
Hamad is charged with four counts of sexual assault and three counts of assault. He lost his job as an Uber driver after he was charged with assault, and went on to pose as one as he preyed on women in the ByWard Market, police claim.
Assistant Crown attorney Malcolm Savage fought unsuccessfully against Hamad’s release and also lost a bid to ban the accused from the ByWard Market.
In releasing Hamad, Ontario Court Justice Ramez Khawly also ruled that Ottawa police will hold on to the accused’s passport while out on bail.
The judge also banned Hamad from driving while on bail.
Defence lawyer Richard Bosada won bail for Hamad after a hearing that ran across three days this week.
Police detectives fear there could be more alleged victims.
Detectives with the sexual assault squad say the three alleged victims range in age from late teens to late 30s.
Police reminded the public to verify their Uber driver’s credentials before getting into a car and that real Uber drivers don’t accept cash.
On May 11, police circulated a description of a suspect after a woman in her late 20s reported that a man posing as an Uber driver had sexually assaulted her then followed her to an ATM in the ByWard Market where she was getting cash to pay him.
Police said at the time that they feared the suspect might be targeting drunk women as bars let out.
Hamad turned himself in to police on May 12, a day after the case hit the news.
