An Ottawa father standing vigil at his son’s bedside in The Ottawa Hospital’s trauma centre says he can’t get many answers about how Evean Tripp Larabie ended up there.
The 23-year-old was taken to hospital in serious condition Friday after reportedly being hit by an OC Transpo bus shortly after 6:30 p.m. It happened near the intersection of Britannia Road and Regina Street, near Britannia Beach.
The young man’s father, Logan Larabie, said he received a Facebook message from one of Evean’s friends at around 7:30 p.m., advising him that his son was in hospital. Larabie couldn’t say why he wasn’t listed as his son’s emergency contact.
After calling the hospital to confirm, Logan Larabie rushed to the Civic. “I’ve been with him ever since,” he said Saturday evening.
According to Larabie, his son has a fractured pelvis and extensive internal bleeding. He underwent a CT scan to confirm there were no further injuries and is now in an induced coma. He’s got road rash on his body and may also have a broken ankle and elbow.
Larabie said hospital staff told him his son was hit by a bus, but provided no further details. He said he hasn’t been able to speak to police or OC Transpo, despite making some efforts on Saturday.
“No one’s told me anything and (Evean’s) in no state to talk. How does a bus run over somebody?” he asked.
Ottawa police investigators are asking the same question.
According to Const. Rob Griffin, Larabie was a passenger on the bus. Prior to the incident, he was either removed from or asked to leave the bus. What exactly transpired — and why — remains under investigation, Griffin said, but the bus may have rolled over Larabie.
“Bus drivers don’t typically ask people to leave the bus,” Griffin said, adding both collision and west division investigators are on the case.
Once he is able, police will want to speak with Evean Larabie to “get his side of the story,” Griffin said.
Twenty-three-year-old Evean Larabie is in an induced coma, according to his father.
Because the young man is not a youth, the constable added, police would not typically have much contact with his family.
Logan Larabie couldn’t speculate about where his son may have been going to or coming from — the incident happened nowhere close to where Larabie lives with his father, stepmother and younger brother, Jonah, near Fisher and Meadowlands.
Like many 23-year-olds living at home, Evean maintains a considerable degree of independence, the father said.
Evean’s bag contained a new shirt, sandals, a mobile phone and cigarettes, so perhaps he was meeting a friend or going to the beach, the father said.
He and the rest of the family are holding up as well as can be expected in the circumstances, he said. “It was nice to hear today that he’s stabilized.”
