Two hazmat teams were dispatched to the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre following a report of an unnamed “suspicious substance” at the jail on Sunday.
“Some correctional officers at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre reported feeling unwell during a routine search of a unit,” said Andrew Morrison, a spokesman for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
According to the ministry, four staff members were sent to hospital. However, Ottawa paramedics say only one worker was transported in stable condition after reporting respiratory and mild gastrointestinal symptoms.
The Ottawa fire department was called shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday. The first fire vehicle arrived at the jail on Innes Road about six minutes later, with the hazmat teams arriving around 7:30 p.m., said fire department spokeswoman Danielle Cardinal.
The scene was deemed secure by about 9:10 p.m. Hazmat technicians are responsible for isolating hazardous and suspicious substances, but not for clean-up or conclusively identifying the substance, said Cardinal.
As a precaution, a number of inmates were relocated inside the jail, said Morrison. The unit has been searched by staff wearing personal protective equipment and has been returned to normal operations, including visitation and inmate programs.
“No other staff or inmates have reported any further ill effects,” he said.
