Twenty-five people have been killed in Ontario crashes involving transport trucks so far this year, a 25 per cent increase over last year, the OPP reports as the force launches a blitz Wednesday aimed at bad driving and “dangerous habits.”

As Operation Corridor hits all of Ontario’s major truck routes June 13-14, the OPP reports that officers have tackled 3,047 collisions involving transport trucks this year.

The force commended the truckers who are committed to safe driving and the other motorists who respect their space but vowed to crack down on dangerous operators.

Highway 401, particularly in the Prescott area, will be among the key areas under surveillance, local OPP detachments reported.

The operation will focus on moving violations, maintenance, equipment and hours of service violations as well as load security.

“Poor driving behaviours and moving violations alone account for a large number of transport truck-related crashes every year,” OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair said. “When other dangerous habits are thrown into the mix such as failure to adhere to vehicle maintenance, inspection and hours of service regulations as well as unsecured loads, it then becomes a question of when, not if more lives will be lost in serious transport truck collisions.”
