A gunpoint mugging for cash and shoes wound up with the getaway car crashing into other vehicles in a pursuit through Sandy Hill, then two suspects in cuffs after a foot chase.

It began at about 4:15 p.m. at Rideau Street and King Edward Avenue when a 22-year-old man was approached by a man who produced a gun, police said. He demanded the victim’s money and a pair of newly-purchased shoes before fleeing in a Dodge Charger.

The victim flagged down a passing patrol officer who spotted the Charger speeding south on King Edward Avenue.

The officer tried to catch up but as the Dodge turned onto Greenfield Avenue, it struck two other vehicles.

“Fortunately, no one was injured in the collision,’ police said.

The two occupants then fled on foot.

Patrol officers collared the driver after a short foot chase, police said. A police dog helped track down the passenger nearby.

Officers at the scene of the crash recovered a loaded 9mm handgun and the stolen property and cash.

Antonio Assaf, 21, and Mckenny Perrin, 26, each face charges of conspiracy, robbery with a firearm and a string of gun offences.

Assaf is charged with pointing a firearm, dangerous driving, flight from police and failing to stop at a collision.

They were to appear in court Friday.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the robbery unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5116.

Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by downloading the Ottawa police app.
