After a two-year hiatus, the team behind Harvest Noir announced Friday that the pop-up picnic and monochrome dance party will return to Ottawa for a final encore in September, under the harvest moon.

Co-organizer Greg Searle described the fundraising event as a “renegade picnic,” modelled after the famed Parisian “Dîner en Blanc” – with an edge.

Ticketholders find out by email the day of the event where to show up, dressed in all-black with baskets in tow, for the evening’s picnic. They’re encouraged to bring their own local food and tableware to celebrate the autumn harvest.

“It kind of developed a reputation for being an edgy place for cultural creatives to get their jam on once a year,” Searle said.

He pointed to the mysterious quality of Harvest Noir when asked to explain its allure (in past years, attendance was up to 1,500 guests). This year, ticket sales will be capped at 500.

“I think for adults there’s very little left in our lives that is a surprise, we have a pretty good idea of what’s coming at Christmas for presents … so it kind of makes you feel a bit like a kid.”

It also provides attendees the chance to play dress-up. From steampunk or goth attire to a traditional cocktail dress with a fascinator and gloves, anything goes as long as it fits the single-colour palette.

“The very first year, we told people to dress in black. By the fifth year, the costumes were extravagant and people were telling us that it was worth the price of admission just to see what everyone else was wearing.”

After its organizers retired Harvest Noir in 2015 to focus on other pursuits, many of its devoted attendees called for a comeback, Searle said. So they conceded — for a final harvest.

This year, all proceeds will go to fund Wheels4Refugees, a local program that refurbishes used bikes for donation to families who have fled the conflict in Syria. An individual or group ticket gets you access to the picnic, “Celebration of Light” and dance after-party.

Searle described the Celebration of Light as a particularly memorable part of past Harvest Noirs. Everyone in attendance is given a sparkler, and last year, they were waved to an opera singer’s aria.

“Every single year I stopped running madly around organizing to just watch, and it would give me chills … it’s just kind of a magical moment, hundreds or a thousand people celebrating together like that.”

Harvest Noir 2018 is scheduled for Sept. 22. Tickets are available at http://tickets.harvestnoir.com/ .
