At Britannia Beach, the announcement came over the loudspeaker at noon on Saturday. With lifeguards taking their posts for the first time, the city’s four beaches were officially open.

Lifeguards will be on duty at all four beaches— Britannia, Mooney’s Bay, Westboro and Petrie Island — from noon to 7 p.m. every day until Aug. 26.

Yes, summer is finally here — OK, technically it doesn’t start until 6:07 a.m. Thursday — and it won’t last long. So soak it up, Ottawa.

Anna Mao and her family spent Saturday at Britannia Beach. Summers in Ottawa are relatively mild and there’s so much to do, says the native of Shanghai, China.

“It can be 40 degrees every day in Shanghai in July and August. And smoggy,” she says. “So I really appreciate it here. There’s so much green space.”

Another sure sign of summer: festival season is gearing up. Carivibe held the spirited Grand Street Parade downtown on Saturday before the festivities moved to Petrie island. The party continues Sunday at Petrie Island, with a closing party beginning at 1 p.m.

Italian Week, which actually lasts almost three weeks and officially ends on June 25, revved up with a parade of more than 100 Italian-made cars, from pint-sized vintage Fiats to sleek Ferraris.

Two couples from Kingston, Wendy and Tony DeLonghi, and Mary Frances and Ian Irving, found streetside seats at a patio on Preston Street to watch the parade. They planned to spend the night at St. Anthony’s Hall at a gala in honour of Prince Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia. Yes, he is a genuine Italian prince.

“It’s like a nice, sunny day in Italy,” said Tony DeLonghi, sipping a Peroni. “You can’t get this in Kingston.”

Adds Bernice Marien, a first-time visitor to the festival watching the parade from the sidewalk: “The weather has been up and down. It’s great to feel some full-on heat. It feels like the first real weekend of the summer.”

Italian Week continues Sunday. Among other events, Juno Award-winning tenor Remigio Pereira is headlining 300-plus years of Italian music at The Gladstone starting at 2:30 p.m.

In Dundonald Park on Somerset Street, artist Ricky Kruger was holding an impromptu “art in the park” day, asking passersby to contribute to a canvas. No artistic skill required, he insisted. “It’s like a glorified paint-by-numbers.”

Kruger says he usually paints on the lawn of his mother’s house on Maitland Avenue. He often spends his winters abroad.

“Summer is the time to be in Ottawa.”

Meanwhile, the Glowfair Festival took over 10 blocks of Bank Street. Nights are reserved for avante-garde glow in the dark costumes and events like the “silent disco” — festival-goers can listen to up to three DJs using wireless headphones. Daytime attractions included indigenous dancers, artists, buskers, a vintage-style roller rink and performances by members of the burlesque company Capital Tease.

Burlesque promotes a positive body image, said founder Koston Kreme. “This is a big summer festival that brings out people who don’t usually see our shows.”

Roseanne Renaud caught the Capital Tease show with her four grandchildren and snapped cellphone photos of them with the performers after.

“There are so many things to see and experience,” she said. “And the weather is absolutely amazing.”

Summer will keep on coming this week. Sunday is expected to be another sunny day, with temperatures reaching 30 C. There will be a break from the sunshine on Monday, according to Environment Canada, but it will be back to warm and sunny the rest of the week.
