A Gatineau police officer shot and killed a charging boxer-type dog Tuesday as the officer investigated why the animal was roaming and door was open at a Lake Beauchamp Park-area home, Gatineau police report.
An investigation of the shooting is now underway.
Neighbours called police to the house on Marcelle Ferron Street at 12:40 p.m. They’d noticed that the door of the house was open and the dog alone on the street.
A responding officer tried to make sure that no one was in distress or crime in progress but the dog was preventing him from entering the house. He called animal control but the dog showed “obvious signs of aggression” first.
“Sadly the dog just charged the police officer while he was waiting for them,” Gatineau police spokeswoman Andrée East said.
Fearing for the safety of himself and bystanders, he fired at the dog, police said.
The dog was pronounced dead at the Outaouais SPCA.
When police entered the home afterwards, they found nothing amiss.
Police were able to reach the homeowner by telephone Tuesday evening and released the details Wednesday morning.
“We didn’t want them to learn about the dog from the media,” East said.
Forensic identification officers were called to the scene to collect evidence for the administrative inquiry that’s carried out any time an officer uses his or her service weapon, police said.
