The Transit Commission today received a report outlining the renewal of the Transit Special Constable program for a five-year period ending on July 31, 2023.
The Special Constable program is a joint initiative between the Ottawa Police Service and OC Transpo. A team of 47 Special Constables patrol Ottawa’s 45 Transitway stations, 17 Park & Rides, and 30 kilometres of bus-only segregated Transitway routes to enhance safety and security for riders. Transit Special Constables have responded to 89,000 calls since 2013.
The Transit Commission also approved the recommendations of the Capital Adjustments and Closing of Projects report, which identified $7.5 million reduction in previously approved capital budget authority resulting in the elimination of $6.5 million of debt financing.
As part of OC Transpo’s Transecure program, the Commission recognized bus operator Larry for coming to the aid of a man who had stopped breathing. The Commission also recognized bus operator Jatinder, who assisted a customer having a seizure on his bus. Thanks to Larry and Jatinder’s quick actions, both individuals received prompt medical attention.
