For a second year, Capital Pride is requesting that off-duty police officers leave their uniforms at home if they choose to participate in festival events.
Board chair Toby Whitfield said the LGBTQ2 community festival’s position hasn’t changed from that outlined in a news release in June 2017, when organizers requested that police uniforms be worn only by those officers working the festival, which runs from Aug. 20-26.
“It is of prime importance to us that everyone feels safe at Pride, particularly LGBTQ2 youth, and racialized and Indigenous community members,” the statement read.
Ottawa police Chief Charles Bordeleau initially pushed back against the request last year and announced he was planning to wear his uniform, as he had in years past, and other police officers were welcome to do so as well. In the end, he changed his stance and attended the parade wearing a golf shirt bearing a police logo.
The theme of Capital Pride 2018 is community, Whitfield announced at an event Wednesday night.
He described the theme as a tribute to “individuals and group that come together locally, nationally and globally to advocate for LGBTQ2+ rights.”
