Powerful carfentanil has turned up in crack cocaine tested at the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre’s drug checking service, advocates for users’ safety warned Thursday.

Overdose Prevention Ottawa issued the advisory warning that the white or cream-coloured substance was thought to be crack but testing turned up the synthetic opioid used by vets on large animals like elephants.

It’s 100 times as toxic as the same amount of fentanyl and 10,000 times as toxic as a unit of morphine, the group warned. Public health officials have long warned that it’s being cut into drugs including counterfeit prescription pills and can’t be seen, smelled or tasted.

People who inject drugs should check substances at the Oasis supervised injection service and take them at a supervised or overdose prevention site. Everyone who uses should avoid using alone and mixing drugs, try a small amount first and carry and learn to use overdose-reversing naloxone.

In the event of a suspect overdose, call 911.

Ottawa police found first found carfentanyl in drugs seized in Ottawa last summer. Health Canada testing — not received until October — showed two samples of what looked like heroin turned out to contain the drug and in one case fentanyl but no heroin.
