The National Gallery of Canada is to begin on July 3 reviewing applications from those who wish to become its new director, says a job posting on a Government of Canada website.
The new hire will replace outgoing director and CEO Marc Mayer, who was expected to step down in early 2019, when the second of his five-year terms concludes.
In recent months, there has also been speculation that Mayer might leave earlier, following the controversy that arose in April surrounding the aborted sale of a treasured Chagall painting in the gallery’s collection.
The job notice, posted in late April, gives no start date for the gallery’s new director.
Candidates should have a university degree in art history or a relevant field of study, experience as a senior executive or CEO, leadership experience on projects of national and international scope, experience in fundraising, financial management and revenue generation, as well as experience in reporting to a board and dealing with government, preferably at a senior level, the job notice states.
The salary range for the director’s position is between $179,200 and $210,800.
Mayer, a Franco-Ontarian originally from Sudbury, took on the director’s role in 2009 following a period of turmoil at the gallery. He is credited with raising the stature of Indigenous art at the gallery and instituting a biennial to showcase acquisitions of Canadian contemporary art, giving a much higher profile to many young, deserving artists in the country.
