Ottawa Fire Services crews were kept busy on Wednesday afternoon, as a pair of fires — one in Vanier and another in Kanata — were doused.

The first, reported around 1:50 p.m., was at a home on Cummings Avenue, where seven occupants live, according to the fire department. The fire was dealt with quickly, and declared under control by 2:04 p.m.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army were to provide assistance to those displaced residents.

An investigator was at the scene to determine the cause of the fire.

The second fire, at the other end of the city, was on Haanel Drive at the Canadian Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology, or CANMET. Fire crews responded to a call there shortly after 2:30 p.m. An HVAC system on the roof had caught fire, which created challenges for the crews battling the blaze.

Shortly after the first truck responded, a second crew was called in to help, as smoke was filling the building. A spokesperson for the fire department said they were not concerned any materials at the centre — which includes laboratories — would pose further danger.

Crews declared the fire under control by 2:48 p.m.

No injuries were reported in either case, and causes were not released.
