Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson is known for his packed schedule of attending community events, especially ones involving VIPs, but the U.S. ambassador’s annual July 4 party isn’t making the cut this year.

Watson said he didn’t want to make the snub a big deal, but he acknowledged that he received and declined an invitation to the U.S. Independence Day party, this year hosted by Ambassador Kelly Craft, who was sworn in to the job last August.

“I politely declined because I’m not happy with the direction of the American government and their constant attacks on our country, and I don’t want to show up to something that I don’t feel comfortable with from a principle point of view of seeing what’s happening with these constant threats to our steel industry, aluminum, our car industry, the dairy industry, and I’ve sent my regrets,” Watson said at city hall when asked by a reporter if he was attending the annual party at the U.S. ambassador’s residence.

The U.S. last month announced tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada, prompting Canada to counter with a list of its own tariffs on U.S. products.

U.S. President Donald Trump has also complained about Canadian agriculture “trade barriers” and mused about auto tariffs on Canadian imports.
