A fixture on the Ottawa police guns and gangs unit’s most-wanted list is behind bars facing charges including attempted murder in a shooting eight years ago.

Khalid Al-Enzi, 29, turned himself in Wednesday in connection with a June 2, 2010 shooting in the city’s south end.

Al-Enzi appeared in court Thursday to face charges that also include extortion, discharging a firearm with intent, unlicensed possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded and regulated firearm, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm while prohibited and breach of probation.

In 2010, police charged a 17-year-old youth and released a photo of Al-Enzi in the shooting police said was tied to Crips gang activity in the city’s south end.

The victim, a 20-year-old man whose name has not been released, was shot once in the midriff near Walkley Road and Sandalwood Drive late that night then dropped at the hospital by a friend, this newspaper reported.

Both refused to cooperate with police and when investigators canvassed neighbours, they’d heard nothing because of the din of fireworks that were being set off that night.
