There’s a long list of street closures this weekend, as the city kicks off its Canada Day celebrations.

Here’s what you need, and in truth will be forced, to avoid behind the wheel:

  • Virtually the entire downtown core north of Laurier Avenue will be closed to motorists between 6 a.m. on July 1 until 2 a.m. on July 2. For the east-west streets, this includes Slater, Albert, and Queen between Lyon and Elgin; for north-south arteries, Elgin, Metcalfe, O’Connor, Bank and Kent will be shut down. Laurier will remain open for through traffic, but you won’t be able to turn north onto any of those streets.
  • After 6 p.m., much of the western end of downtown will be closed as well. This includes Slater, Albert and Queen, and Wellington, which will then be closed all the way west to Bronson. Running north-south, Bronson and Bay will also be shut down north of Laurier.
  • The ByWard Market will also be nearly entirely closed to cars on Sunday, as crowds are expected around Majors Hill Park. All of the major roads west of Dalhousie and south of St. Patrick will be closed for most of the day.
  • People who absolutely need to drive on those streets — residents, or hotel guests, for instance — will be able to access the roads as long as they have proof of address or hotel reservation.

An interactive map of road closures can be found here.

If this seems confusing to you, that’s alright. A good rule of thumb is, if you are presently asking yourself “well, could I find a way to still drive right into the downtown core?”, quickly dispense with that notion, and plan to avail yourself of OC Transpo’s free Canada Day service. These are simply the streets that are officially closed; others could be rendered virtually undriveable as a result of traffic and crowds. Best to play it safe.

There are other closures planned outside of the core, too. In Kanata Charlie Rogers Way will be closed between Ron Maslin Way and the Kanata Recreation Centre from 8 a.m. on June 29, and will reopen at midnight on Tuesday, July 3.

In Barrhaven, Strandherd Drive will be closed during the Canada Day fireworks between McKenna Casey Drive and Borrisokane Road from 9:45 pm until approximately 10:30 pm.
