Vanessa Williams always told Allan Trim, if he was going to propose marriage, he should make sure it wasn’t on Christmas or her birthday, and “definitely not” on Valentine’s Day.
“I always wanted it on an off-day,” she said with a laugh. “But I never said, ‘Never Canada Day.'”
Trim seized his opportunity on Sunday and asked Williams to marry him in front of a cheering crowd and family members at the National Arts Centre. Williams, a vocalist, had just finished a concert with The Academy Choir gospel group.
“It was perfect timing. I had no clue because I was so into the performance that I wouldn’t even suspect it,” Williams said.
After fighting back tears, she said, “Yes.”
Trim said he chose July 1 to pop the question because it was a date Williams would always remember. Not only was it Canada Day, but it was also her late uncle’s birthday.
“She’s just a kind person, a selfless person who’s always given of herself,” Trim said. “I wanted to create a lasting memory that is going to forever stick with her.”
The two have been dating for about three years. They met through their church, Emmanuel Apostolic, near Hunt Club Road.
“He’s always been in the church, but I’m the music leader. I don’t have time to glance over at anyone,” Williams said.
It was only after Williams’ father — the church’s pastor — requested that Trim call their house that the two connected.
“I don’t know to this day if my dad ever got that message, but we started talking on the phone and then literally that was it. We became really great friends,” she said.
After a celebratory dinner at Grill 41 in the Lord Elgin Hotel, they were headed home with their two daughters to cool off and unwind. “Maybe take a good look at my ring a few more times,” Williams said.
