Spoiler alert, it’s not quick and easy.
The first Ottawa Citizen YouTube video was uploaded Oct. 25, 2007, only two years behind the first YouTube upload ever.
11 years and 13,452 video uploads later, it happened: 10 million views. While that might sound somewhat less impressive, it’s still a milestone to be proud of. In the past decade, the digital media landscape has changed rapidly, with the rise and fall of mega-platforms (hello IGTV, RIP Vine) and the continued shifting of the news industry.
The Ottawa Citizen is still here, pushing the boundaries of what a local newspaper can accomplish.
YouTube — a juvenile 13-year-old compared to the Citizen’s stately 173 — has proven to have stamina. More than 1.8 billion users login to YouTube every month, and five billion videos are watched every day, said YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki in May.
In celebration of this veritable video milestone, we dug into the archives to find the classics. Enjoy.
The Ottawa’s Citizen’s 10 favourite videos of all time
Raccoon vs Ottawa green bin
Drama, comedy, shock and awe; this black and white security footage video has it all. In 2015, The Ottawa Citizen’s Glen McGregor set up a video camera to see if the green bin really is animal proof. The resulting footage is a must watch battle for the ages.
Average Joes try training like an elite athlete
Postmedia’s Alison Mah and Brian Platt thought of themselves as pretty athletic until the Ottawa Senators strength training coach put them through their paces. Mah has since put on five pounds of muscle, “it was a real wakeup call.”
Media experiences “water shots”
Turns out a shot of water can be pretty explosive. Chief Petty Officer 2nd class Andrew Moulton welcomes media to HMCS Victoria, and Lt.-Cmdr Darryl Gervis, Weapons Systems Engineering Officer explains during a simulated torpedo launch.
Five, four, three, two…
OC Sessions presents Jim Cuddy
On quiet winter day, Canadian music legend Jim Cuddy strolled into the OC Session studio to play a couple of songs from his new album Constellation. The performance surprised and amazed editor Dave Dutton, who typically enjoys a less musical weekend newsroom. Bonus points if you can spot Dutton’s accidental photo bomb.
Is Google defeating publication bans?
After noticing a strange anomaly, when the name of a protected member of a court case was revealed on google, our editors checked furiously to see a mistake had been made. It hadn’t, which posed the question: Did Google reveal the name of a person protected by a publication ban? This question turned into an investigation by reporter Andrew Duffy, who then teamed up with Engagement Editor Nicole Feriancek to create this video explaining on how this powerful search engine might be violating Canadian law.
EXCLUSIVE: Senator Brazeau’s darkest hour
In 2016, reporter Gary Dimmock and photographer Chris Mikula ventured on a canoe-camping trip to an island 60 kilometres north of Ottawa in the Gatineau River, with Senator Patrick Brazeau, where he shared intimate details about the night he tried to kill himself, and spoke of hope — now that he has it — for his future.
Flavours of the Caribbean serves some of Ottawa’s most spicy — and tasty — fare (aka the spice challenge)
Business and Tech reporter Vito Pilieci and City Editor Drake Fenton go head to head to see who can take the heat. The battle is not one for the ages. In fact, it’s not even close.
‘Love opens your eyes’
The love story of Jeremy Abramson and Jessie Huggett will win over even the coldest at heart. From Valentine’s Day 2018.
Local Coffee Taste Challenge
It’s a classic premise, but the results will shock you. Coffee-worshipping journalists participate in a blind coffee taste test, with amusing results. Special shoutout to the eyebrow dexterity of Editor in Chief Michelle Richardson.
Jonathan Pitre: 2000-2018
Of course this list could not be complete without our home grown hero, Jonathan Pitre who continues to inspire and impact people all over the world, even after his death. This poignant and emotional video certainly proves Pitre’s innate ability to connect: the video currently has 5.7 million views and nearly 20,000 comments. A legend.
