Friends and family have set up a GoFundMe page for a 26-year-old woman who is in serious condition after she was hit by a personal watercraft while floating along the Gatineau River on Canada Day.
The Sûreté du Québec said the woman, identified as Casey on the GoFundMe page, was floating on a large party raft on the river near l’Île Patry, about 25 kilometres south of Maniwaki, with six other people, when they were struck by a personal watercraft. Police said that they are not sure what led to the watercraft hitting the woman, but think that the driver may have been doing “manoeuvres” designed to “make waves.”
On Tuesday, police spokesperson Sgt. Marc Tessier confirmed two watercrafts believed to be involved in the incident had been found near Bouchette, but they have yet to locate the owners.
“We did locate two personal watercrafts and they were seized,” said Tessier. “A nautical collision investigation will be done on the watercrafts. We are expecting to do some arrests, but I can’t say when.”
The woman was taken to an Ottawa hospital with life-threatening injuries.
According to the GoFundMe page, it was set up to help support Casey and her family. So far, they have surpassed their goal of $2,500 and have raised more than $4,000 just 14 hours after the page was created.
The page administrator describes Casey as an outgoing, “incredibly kind woman, teacher to her students,” who is in critical care unit in a hospital.
“While on her way to the hospital, Casey was placed into a medically induced coma and will remain in this state for an unknown amount of time. From what we have heard from doctors, family and friends, Casey is suffering from her injuries which are being closely monitored by staff at the hospital.”
