If you’ve walked through City Hall recently, you might be wondering what happened to the Barbara Ann Scott exhibit. It officially closed in June 2018.
The exhibit, consisting of approximately 300 items including figure skating medals, trophies, and various awards, was always scheduled to run for five years, ending in 2018. In its place, a new Archives’ exhibit will open later this year.
All of Scott’s collectibles used in the exhibit, including silver serving trays, crystal vases, manuscript material and other memorabilia and collectibles are stored in the City of Ottawa Archives’ temperature and humidity controlled vaults. Opening hours and details on how to view the collection can be found on the Archives pages of Ottawa.ca
The information panels used in the exhibit have been given new life. The panels have been restructured and are now permanently on display at the Barbara Ann Scott Arena at 2250 Torquay Ave.
Barbara Ann Scott-King was a former Ottawa resident who went on to become four-time Canadian Ladies Figure Skating Champion, two-time European and Worlds Ladies Figure Skating Champion, and Olympic Ladies Figure Skating champion at the 1948 Winter Olympics.
The new exhibit opening later this year is called Postcards from Ottawa: Traveller Tales. It’ll be a unique opportunity to see Ottawa’s history through the eyes and words of the individuals who have influenced the city and through the eyes and words of the Algonquin people, on whose un-ceded territory Ottawa resides. Some travellers stayed to live. Most moved on. But all, in their own way, engaged Ottawa and its people.
In fact, there may even be a Barbara Ann Scott item in the exhibit. Stay tuned!
