The City of Ottawa received a $25,000 EcoConnexions grant from Tree Canada and CN to support Byron Linear Park tree relocation activities ahead of Stage 2 Light Rail Transit (LRT) construction.
Light rail is being extended farther south, east and west as part of the Stage 2 LRT Project. The Confederation Line West will extend light rail from Tunney’s Pasture to Baseline Road and Moodie Drive, travelling beneath an enhanced Byron Linear Park between Cleary Avenue and McEwen Avenue. Trees in Byron Linear Park will be removed to construct light rail transit beneath the park.
With the help of the $25,000 grant, the City of Ottawa has relocated 50 transplantable trees along the future alignment near Byron Linear Park to suitable areas within the local community prior to construction, which may begin as early as 2019. This support will help maintain the City’s urban tree canopy along the future light rail corridor.
This project was one of only 27 across Canada chosen for the CN EcoConnexions grant. Tree Canada lauded the uniqueness of preserving trees and relocating them in the community ahead of construction.
Once construction is complete, reliable light rail transit will run beneath an enhanced Byron Linear Park that has more trees, improved pathways, public art, and additional plaza space for local events.
Quotes
“While we are excited about extending light rail to more residents, we are aware of the impacts of construction. This grant will help us preserve and increase our tree canopy in the neighbourhood and in Byron Linear Park. We thank Tree Canada and CN for their support of this project. Providing sustainable public transportation and maintaining our urban tree canopy go hand-in-hand towards making Ottawa’s air cleaner and our city more livable.”
Jim Watson, Mayor, City of Ottawa
"Tree Canada is thrilled to be working with CN to enhance the tree canopies of so many deserving communities across Canada," said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada. "These trees we nurture are a living legacy that will enrich our country, our communities and our homes for decades to come. These communities greened through CN EcoConnexions will be a lasting testament to CN’s exemplary environmental leadership."
Mike Rosen, Tree Canada President
“CN is committed to making a positive impact on the communities along our network, and is proud to be part of a program that helps to make these communities better places to live, work and play. We’re not only helping beautify these communities, we’re positively contributing to a sustainable future one community at a time.”
Louis-Alexandre Lanthier, Senior Manager, Government Affairs for CN
“The Government of Canada is proud to celebrate this tree-planting initiative as part of the Stage 2 LRT project. Sustainably-minded infrastructure projects like this that are preserving nature, enhancing public spaces and improving transit options are what make Canada a great place to live and raise a family.”
Anita Vandenbeld, Member of Parliament for Ottawa West–Nepean, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities
“Our government believes that world-class cities deserve world-class transit. The Ottawa Stage 2 construction project will improve transit for commuters in Ottawa and make the city more accessible for residents and visitors alike. I would like to thank Tree Canada and CN for this grant which will ensure that Byron Linear Park will have more trees and continue to be a beautiful, green space for our community.”
