Getting around
- It’s still construction season. If you need to get around by car or bike, check out our Travel and Mobility information first.

- Do you have a pet? Don’t forget to have it registered.
- New city? New apartment? Be fire safe and always have two ways out.
- Moving out for the first time? Watch what you heat - cooking fires are the number 1 cause of fires in Ontario.
- Whether you live in a home, an apartment or in residence on campus, make sure your dwelling has a working smoke alarm!
- Stay safe with the right stuff. Pack an emergency kit with a radio, water, flashlight, batteries, snacks and important contact numbers.
- Enjoy your first year safely – make preparing for emergencies part of your first year checklist.

- There is always someone to listen when you need help. Call the Ottawa Mental Health Crisis Line at 613-722-6914, 1-866-996-0991, and if outside Ottawa, the Distress Centre of Ottawa and Region (EN) at 613-238-3311
- Find youth-related information online at thelinkottawa.ca and ottawa.ca/youth.
- Visit Employment Ontario or Youth and Student Employment Services for employment opportunities.
- Get involved in your new community by volunteering.
- Want to make a difference in Ottawa? Consider joining the Ottawa Youth Engagement Committee (OYEC), which helps encourage youth engagement and to amplify youth voice and representation at the City of Ottawa.
- New to Canada? If you are studying in Canada as an International Student, find information about studying, living and working from the Government of Canada.
- Low on funds to pay for basics, such as food and rent? In search of child care or other supports? You may be eligible for benefits. Call 3-1-1, select 1 for English and 4 for Social Services.
