The Transit Commission today received the OC Transpo financial results for the second quarter of 2018, which indicated a surplus of $68,000 when compared with the operating budget. The results were made up of savings in expenditures of $2.72M, primarily due to compensation savings and lower fuel and facility costs, and a revenue shortfall of $2.54M, which was primarily due to changes in the demographic makeup of transit customers. The current projected estimate forecasts a year-end deficit of $815,000.
As part of the Transecure program, the Commission recognized three OC Transpo employees.
In May, a bus operator reported a young boy travelling alone on his bus who looked lost. The operator called the Transit Operations Control Centre, and it was determined that the boy had been reported missing. Police were able to reunite him with his family.
In June, a customer approached a bus operator after being harassed on a bus platform. The operator invited the customer onto her bus and called the Transit Operations Control Centre for assistance. Special Constables were dispatched to the scene to investigate.
In July, a bus operator reported an intoxicated passenger with a young child to the Transit Operations Control Centre. Soon after, OC Transpo Special Constables Unit and Ottawa Police Services arrived on the scene and intervened to ensure the safety of both the child and the female passenger.
