Divorce Act: legislation to strengthen and modernize Canada’s family justice system
In May, our government introduced new measures to strengthen and modernize family justice with Bill C-78. Protecting families, particularly children, from the negative outcomes often related to separation and divorce is a priority for our government. Census 2016 found that more than two million children were living in separated or divorced families. More than five million Canadians separated or divorced between 1991 and 2011, and among those, 38 per cent had a child together at the time. This bill aims to promote the best interests of the child while addressing key issues like family violence and child poverty.
