Trick or treaters
- The best costumes are light-coloured or reflective.
- Carry a flashlight or glow stick with you.
- Costumes should be short to allow for safe walking.
- Dress for the weather. Add layers underneath your costume if it’s a cold night.
- Use face makeup instead of a mask – as many masks impede vision.
- Don’t trick-or-treat alone; have an adult supervise at all times.
- Have an adult check the candy before anyone dives in for a treat

At home
- When designing a jack-o’-lantern, keep the sharp carving tools with the adults.
- Use battery-powered lights or tea-light candles instead of a regular candle.
- If you use a regular candle, make sure it is on a steady surface and away from anything that can burn – such as curtains, costumes or other decorations
- Never leave a lit candle unattended.
- Don’t mix alcohol and drugs.
- Before you go out, plan your travel home with a designated driver or paid transportation.
- If you are walking, be sure you are easily visible to drivers and that you follow the rules of the road.
- If you feel unsafe or unwell, ask for help immediately from people you know.
- Call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone else is unable to walk, has a change in their level of consciousness, or other signs of overdose or alcohol poisoning.
