City Council, meeting for the last time in this Term of Council, today highlighted the contributions of the outgoing Councillors.
Mayor Jim Watson presented departing Councillors with commemorative photographs as a token of appreciation for their dedication and service to the City and its residents. Councillors Bob Monette, Jody Mitic, Marianne Wilkinson, Shad Qadri, Mark Taylor, David Chernushenko and Michael Qaqish each received a framed photograph of a scene of significance in their wards.
The new City Council, elected in October, will be sworn in at its inaugural meeting on Monday, December 3.
Council approved an Official Plan amendment to encourage development of a main street and green space in the Kanata Town Centre. The City owns 11.6 hectares of vacant land in the Kanata Town Centre, south of Campeau Drive and east of Kanata Avenue. A concept plan for the area was developed in 1993, but the lands remain vacant. The amended policies encourage development by revising minimum residential density targets to reflect buildings constructed to date. Approved changes also allow for more open space and provide a functional design for the reconstruction of a portion of Kanata Avenue, potentially a central main street for Kanata.
The 2018-2022 Governance Review report was tabled today and will be considered at the first meeting of the newly elected Council on December 5. The governance report recommends the Committee structure for the 2018-2022 Term of Council and includes amendments to various policies, by-laws and procedures.
Council also approved an application to designate Cobble Cottage, at 420 Kenwood Avenue, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. The 1912 bungalow is a rare Ottawa example of a fieldstone house, and a local landmark that was one of the original residences within Westboro’s Highland Park development. Designation provides additional oversight and protection for the property, giving Council authority to review and approve any future alterations to the exterior.
Council directed the Planning, Infrastructure and Economic Development Department to bring forward two City-initiated Zoning By-law amendments to the Planning Committee. The first amendment would permit a soundstage campus and creative hub with related office and production uses at 1740 Woodroffe Avenue. The second would rezone the lands at 3798 Bank Street to align with the Natural Link designation of the Greenbelt Master Plan 2013.
