Continuing a 34-year tradition, City of Ottawa staff and community members came together to make the annual OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive a great success. A total of 121,038 food and non-perishable items and $38,400 in cash and food vouchers were delivered to the Ottawa Food Bank’s Michael Street warehouse. These donations will stock the shelves of those who need some extra help during the upcoming holiday season.
On Saturday, December 1, OC Transpo buses were parked outside participating Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, Your Independent Grocer and No Frills locations in Ottawa. More than 600 City of Ottawa employees and their families volunteered to fill the buses with donated items. In addition to the food drive, City employees also generously donated to the City’s internal campaign, which ran from November 1 to 30.
The food drive collects items for four local food banks: the Ottawa Food Bank, the Family Service Association of Churches Food Cupboard in Nepean, the Stittsville Food Bank and the Kanata Food Cupboard. Every day, the Ottawa Food Bank’s Michael Street warehouse distributes 14 tons of food. This provides 114 member agencies with supplies to feed more than 38,400 people each month.
The OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive is a joint effort between OC Transpo, the City of Ottawa and local Loblaw banner stores.
